The Birthday Plate

Chris and I were adamant about starting family traditions when we first got married. One of our coolest traditions is the BIRTHDAY PLATE. The tradish goes like this: on your birthday you can choose ANYTHING you would ever want to eat for dinner and everyone else in the family will search the world up and down in order to place it on the birthday plate for you.

We went to one of those paint-your-own pottery places and decorated up a plate, signed our family name on the back, and the rules were set. We've only had 2.5 years so far of the Birthday Plate tradition, but I'm sure it will stick with us forever.

So, for my birthday dinner last night I requested the following meal. I was going for a Hawaiian/Tex-Mex fusion.

  • Taro Root Chips (a favorite from our honeymoon)
  • A Variety of Vegetables Tempura with sweet soy vinegar dipping sauce
  • Tequila & Lime Marinated Shrimp with Chipotle Aioli sauce
  • Lime Margarita on the rocks with salt

You should have seen Chris roll his eyes when I revealed my requested menu, but I could also see the gears turning in his head. How was he going to pull this off? Well, was there ever any doubt? The best birthday gift I could ever have was watching my hubs slave over a gourmet meal made just for me. And I'll have the joy of slaving over his gourmet meal in December. I can't wait!

Hi!
I can't hardly stand how delicious Chris' vegetables tempura look- were they fried? Any ideas for a low-cal prep for this recipe? If not, everything in moderation, right? I'd like the recipe either way. Thanks!
